چکیده
By BERNARD CZERNOBILSKY, HOWARD H. FREEDMAN AND ABRAHAM M. FRUMIN F OAMY HISTIOCYTES were found in three of 47 spleens removed for chronic idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura ( ITP) . Fat stains demonstrated the absence of lipid. These cells have never been reported in ITP except for a brief mention by Carpenter et a!.’ Somewhat similar histiocytes have been described in thalassemia2, and in an ill-defined condition characterized by splenomegaly.4 The morphologic and histochemical characteristics of these cells will be described and an analysis made of the clinical and hematologic findings of the three patients.

Phospholipid accumulation in histiocytes of splenic pulp associated with thrombocytopenic purpura.
CCUMULATION of lipid, presumably phospholipid, in histiocytes of the splenic cords has been seen in association with thrombocytopenic purpura in six patients operated on in Barnes Hospital. At the time that each of the first four were examined, a diagnosis or description of lipid histiocytosis of the spleen was made, but after that the constant association with thrombocytopenic purpura was note...

S ALTZSTEIN,’ AND LANDING ET AL,2 in 1961 described the occurrence of lipid laden histiocytes in spleens examined in patients with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura following splenectomy. These workers suggested that these changes were due to an accumulation of lipids following the ingestion of platelets by the splenic reticuloendothelial system. Similar interpretations have been made by Hill...
متن کاملStorage cells of spleen and bone marrow in thalassemia: an ultrastructural study.
In the spleens and bone marrows of patients with thalassemia, we have consistently observed PAS-positive histiocytes that contain numerous cytoplasmic bodies surrounded by a single membrane and filled with bundles of fine fibrils (typical thalassemia storage cells). In addition to the characteristic cytoplasmic bod ies, some histiocytes contained leukocytes, erythrocytes, platelets, and plasma ...

متن کاملChanges in splenic microcirculatory pathways in chronic idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura.
The spleen plays a central role in the pathogenesis of chronic idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP); it produces massive quantities of antiplatelet antibodies, leading to accelerated phagocytosis of platelets. Lymphoid hyperplasia typically occurs in the spleen, characterized by large numbers of lymphatic nodules with active germinal centers. Whether changes in splenic microcirculatory pat...
